What makes you decide to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner?

I have decided to become a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner because I am passionate about helping those suffering from mental health issues. I want to provide holistic and comprehensive care to those in need. I want to be able to diagnose, treat, and manage acute illnesses, provide psychotherapy and medication, and provide preventative care. Furthermore, the PMHNP role is a vital component of primary care, and it is essential to have well-educated individuals with the theoretical orientation to provide mental health services (Birch et al., 2021). As a PMHNP, I can ensure that the individuals I treat receive the best care possible. I am passionate about providing mental health services and am committed to making a positive difference in the lives of those I am treating.

What are the values that may help you develop that role?

The values that will help me develop the role of a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner are centered on compassion, empathy, and respect. I want to provide a safe and supportive environment for my patients to feel comfortable and secure. Furthermore, I value listening to my patients and understanding their individual needs. It is essential to take the time to build a therapeutic relationship with my patients so that they can trust me and feel comfortable sharing their feelings (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2019). Additionally, I value advocating for my patients and providing them with the necessary resources to get the help they need. Finally, I value evidence-based practice and staying up to date on the latest research to provide the best care possible.

What is your plan to develop the knowledge skills and competencies necessary for advance practice?

I plan to continuously pursue educational opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, and competencies necessary for advanced practice as a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner. This includes attending conferences and workshops relevant to the PMHNP role, reading up on the latest research and evidence-based practice, and connecting with other professionals in the field (Johnson et al., 2021). Additionally, I plan to take advantage of the resources available from the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, such as their online learning modules. This will ensure that I am staying up to date on the latest best practices and new developments in the field. Finally, I plan to complete a residency program or fellowship to gain experience in the PMHNP role and further develop my skills and competencies.

Various factors helped me to Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). Firstly, I have the desire to help change the world today, where despite the prevalence of mental health issues among the young populations, there is still significant stigma tied to it, and people are still more afraid and unable to access the care they need. Therefore, I chose to do it to increase my capability to address these issues in society, more as a calling than a Paid profession. Additionally, I chose to follow this career path due to my acquaintance and recognition of my ability to meet the demand for mental health awareness in society today. There is a greater focus on mental health awareness today than in previous years; hence I am motivated to help people seeking professional help. Moreover, a greater projected growth outlook makes this career an astounding job choice. According to the Bureau of labor Statistics, the outlook for psychiatric NP growth outlook for this profession stands at 26.8% (Post University, 2021). This means I can find numerous job opportunities regardless of whether I work in a private or public setting.

There are various values I will employ to achieve this, including compassion. When I apply compassion in the mental health setting, I can achieve therapeutic alliance, understand the patient’s needs, increase the patient’s transparency, and develop a close relationship with my patients, which is essential for developing my role in the sector. Secondly, communication will significantly help me by allowing me to interact with my colleagues and patients to achieve the best outcomes. Additionally, integrity will help me uphold the appropriate ethics in the field and allow me to practice effectively. Lastly, I believe that with critical thinking, I can make better decisions and become better at learning and practicing.

My plan to develop knowledge and competencies is to continue the learning process. Nursing is a lifelong learning profession because the medical field changes daily, and there are always new patient needs (De Leeuw et al., 2020). Secondly, I will network with others to learn significantly from them and consult where possible. This way, I can be better positioned to achieve my objectives and develop my career.

For many years I have worked in the mental health field, and I can see the impact that providers make in the patients’ life helping them through an accurate diagnosis, giving the right medication, psychotherapy, and sometimes just accompanying them across their process. All of these motivated me to continue my education to become a PMHNP, to be able to provide the clients with their so longed relief.

Compassion, empathy, fidelity, beneficence, respect for client’s autonomy, nonmaleficence, justice, and confidentiality (Varcarolis, 2021), are the main values I strongly believe any nurse including psychiatric nurses must follow.

Due to the strong correlation between mental health and the wellbeing of the patient (Martyn, 2022), I plan to prepare myself for the role of mental health practitioner in a holistic way, evaluating the client, biologically, psychologically, and socially. To do that, I commit to study all the contents included in the course, begin the clinical practice with an excellent preceptor where I would be able to apply the theoretical concepts acquired at school.

I decided to become a PMHNP because of psychiatric nurses’ outstanding work and impact. The work is associated with their duties and roles as healthcare providers. Today, PMHNPs can test and evaluate their patients and give them a mental health treatment and recovery plan; the plan is either therapy, medication, or both (Kaas, 2020). Also, I know that becoming a PMHNP helps me provide psychiatric care services in a professional way that aims to improve the lives of individuals suffering from acute and chronic mental health conditions. I have been eager to gain both theoretical and practical knowledge of being a PMHNP; so that I can understand how to address different disorders such as anxiety, depression, and PTSD that commonly affects the people.

The important values that a psychiatric nurse should possess for the role are the values that can help me develop a therapeutic relationship with a client. A psychiatric nurse should be compassionate, sensitive, and have strong communication skills (Moyo et al., 2022). Additionally, as a nurse, I should know how to manage time, have organizational skills, be empathetic, and have critical thinking and decision-making skills. These values are important for me because, in my role, I can handle different patients effectively. By understanding the uniqueness of each client, I can create the right interaction atmosphere.

To prepare sufficiently for advanced practice, the plan is to get through with my undergraduate and graduate degrees. Education qualifications are the key to developing the right competencies, skills, and knowledge for my roles in advanced practice (Morreale et al., 2020). This includes attaining good grades and passing my certification exams. Also, I could use the help of a mentor and develop an attitude of always being informed and keeping up with the current trends so that I can effectively care for mental health patients.
