Introduction to the Change Initiative

This exercise sharpens your ability to succinctly convey complex ideas and promote a change initiative effectively. Presenting a change proposal mimics a common scenario in healthcare leadership, where DNPs often need to pitch ideas and gather support.

You will have the opportunity to refine your understanding of how stakeholder engagement, risk assessment, and change frameworks align to create a successful organizational-wide change initiative. This assignment helps you practice presenting a high-level overview of your change initiative.

Instructions:

  1. Introduction to the Change Initiative:
    • Provide a brief description of the change initiative you are proposing. For example, propose a new scheduling system, triage process, or patient flow model. Explain how this initiative will address the root causes of long wait times and improve patient care.
  2. Vision and Expected Outcomes:
    • Outline your vision for how the change will positively impact patients and staff. For example, how will reducing wait times improve patient satisfaction and care outcomes? How will it benefit staff by reducing burnout and increasing workflow efficiency?
  3. Risk Considerations:
    • Identify two or three risks you foresee in implementing this change, such as potential resistance from staff, logistical challenges with the new system, or unintended consequences for patients. Explain how your plan will address and mitigate these risks.
  4. Stakeholder Engagement Strategy:
    • Describe the critical stakeholders for this initiative (e.g., outpatient department staff, hospital administration, patients, IT support for new systems, etc.). Provide one or two strategies you would use to engage and gain buy-in from these groups effectively.
  5. Change Framework:
    • Select a change management framework (e.g., Kotter’s 8-Step Change Model, Lewin’s Change Theory, etc.). Briefly explain why this framework is appropriate for your change initiative and how it can guide you through successfully implementing the change.
  6. Presentation Format:
    • Create a presentation using a free tool (such as PowerPoint, Canva, or Google Slides). Your presentation should be 5- slides and include a brief voiceover or video to simulate a real-world proposal presentation to hospital leadership.
