On September 22, 2010, an Environmental Health Officer (EHO) from the local city council notified the Health Protection Unit that 11 children from a local swimming club were experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhea and abdominal cramps). The swimming club was based at a local leisure center with a 25m swimming pool. The club, with over 200 members aged 4–20 years old, trained four evenings a week and regularly competed in competitions. At other times, the pool was used by members of the public, swimming classes for babies, toddlers, and adults with learning difficulties, and a number of local schools.
