Addressing Obesity in Low-Income Community

Health Promotion Plan

Obesity in a Low-Income Urban Community

Scenario: In a face-to-face setting, I’m developing a health promotion plan targeting obesity in a low-income urban community, specifically focusing on adults aged 25-45, residing in the inner city, primarily African American and Hispanic, with diverse educational backgrounds, ranging from high school to some college education. These individuals face challenges due to limited access to fresh foods, sedentary lifestyles, and cultural influences that promote unhealthy eating habits.

Rationale for the Chosen Population: This demographic is predisposed to obesity due to socioeconomic factors like limited access to nutritious foods, higher stress levels, and fewer opportunities for physical activity due to safety concerns in the neighborhood. The prevalence of fast-food outlets and cultural dietary preferences that include calorie-dense foods exacerbates the issue.

Characteristics of the Hypothetical Group:

  • Maria, a 35-year-old Hispanic woman, is a primary caregiver, works two jobs to make ends meet, and lives in a neighborhood with limited access to fresh produce.
  • Jamal, a 28-year-old African American man, recently laid off, relies on fast food due to budget constraints, and lacks knowledge about healthy eating.
  • Sarah, a 40-year-old African American woman, works long hours in a low-paying job, facing stress-related binge eating habits.

Sociogram Development: Considering social, economic, and lifestyle factors, the educational plan will address limited access to healthy food options, the influence of cultural eating habits, stress management techniques, and the importance of physical activity in a safe environment.

Identifying Potential Learning Needs:

  • Understanding the impact of diet on health
  • Developing practical strategies for healthier food choices within a limited budget
  • Stress management techniques
  • Importance of regular physical activity despite limited resources

Current Behaviors and Expectations: Individuals in the group have irregular eating patterns, relying on convenience foods, limited physical activity, and inadequate stress management techniques. The session aims to provide practical guidance on healthier food alternatives, stress reduction methods, and accessible exercise options.

Health Promotion Goals:

  1. Increase awareness of healthy food choices by 30% within three months.
  2. Increase engagement in physical activity by 25% within six months.
  3. Reduce stress-related eating habits by 20% within four months.

By addressing these goals through educational sessions, tailored to their socio-economic and cultural context, the aim is to foster behavior changes and promote sustainable health outcomes within this community.
