Evidence-based practice (EBP) supports nurses having both a significant influence on patient care, and becoming partners in improving the quality of individualized treatment. “EBP is a problem-solving approach to clinical decision-making within a healthcare organization that integrates the best available scientific evidence with the best available experiential (patient and practitioner) evidence” (Hain & Kear, 2015, p.12). EBP encourages critical thinking in the application of evidence from research which supports the care of an individual patient, patient population, or a system.
Write a 3 – 4 page paper (total # of pages does not include the title and reference pages).
Include at least 2 scholarly resources to support your positions.
Use APA formatting for all in-text citations and full references at the end.
Part 1: Answer the following questions:
- What is the difference between EBP and research? When is one, versus the other, needed?
- What are the barriers to EBP?
- Your personal experience: Where do you use EBP in your workplace? Give at least 1 example. If it is not used in your workplace, what prevents EBP from being utilized?
Part 2:
Write a clinical Case Study of a patient whose care does not include EBP. This can be fictional, or an actual patient from your experience (do not use real names, initials only).
Case Study must include:
- Patient’s initials, age, demographics (if applicable to the case study)
- Diagnosis and the patient care and/or treatment given
- Reason why this patient care and/or treatment is frequently used
- Outcome of the patient care and/or treatment
Part 3:
You are the newly hired nurse manager on your unit with extensive knowledge of evidence-based practice (EBP). You have discovered that the currently used patient care (and/or treatment) from the Case Study above is not supported by EBP and has only minimal to negative results. You want to include EBP in the care of this patient and improve treatment outcome.
- What initial steps do you need to take?
- Who would you need to contact first to make this change?
- How would you engage your peers?
- Once approved, how do you implement this new protocol?
- Which DCN Graduate Competency role (or roles) are you demonstrating, and why? (Example: patient advocate, caregiver, educator, change agent, leader). (See the DCN Catalog, pp.11-12, Figure 1, for further details).
