As an advanced practice nurse, I have had the privilege of working with diverse individuals and helping them achieve their health goals. In this scenario, I have been tasked with coaching a new nurse practitioner in the acquisition of vulnerability behaviors. The role and level of the person being coached is a newly graduated nurse practitioner.

The vulnerability cycle is a process that involves recognizing and accepting one’s limitations, acknowledging and sharing one’s feelings, and being receptive to feedback from others. It is an essential aspect of developing healthy relationships, enhancing personal growth, and improving mental health. The components of the vulnerability cycle include openness, trust, empathy, and courage. Openness refers to the willingness to share one’s thoughts and feelings without fear of judgment. Trust involves having faith in oneself and others to share and receive information without feeling threatened or rejected. Empathy is the ability to understand and relate to the feelings and experiences of others. Courage refers to the willingness to face challenges and take risks despite the fear of failure or rejection.

In a vulnerability culture, relationships are characterized by mutual respect, trust, and empathy. Individuals are encouraged to express their thoughts and feelings openly and honestly without fear of criticism or ridicule. The culture values vulnerability as a means of fostering personal growth and enhancing relationships. Examples of relationships that emerge in a vulnerability culture include partnerships, friendships, and mentor-mentee relationships.

To sustain vulnerability behaviors, two strategies can be implemented. Firstly, practicing active listening is crucial in building trust and empathy. Active listening involves giving the other person your undivided attention, acknowledging their emotions, and asking clarifying questions. I will encourage the new nurse practitioner to reflect on their experiences and feelings, acknowledge their limitations, and be receptive to feedback from others. Additionally, I will model vulnerability behaviors through active listening, sharing personal experiences, and expressing my feelings honestly.
