Question to Explore Beliefs and Perceptions

This week our readings took us into Specific Aspects of Health Promotion for the following conditions: Weight Management and Digestive Wellness, Cardiovascular Wellness, and Respiratory Wellness.

Imagine you are leading a focus group which is implementing one of the nursing interventions learned for a specific health problem.

Having you as a moderator of a community focus group that will explore knowledge, believes, attitudes and behaviors about your selected health problem [you may select any health problem]:

  1. Define your group and the setting for the activity, applying statistical principles of sample size and homogeneity.
  2. Create and share an opening question to explore perceptions of the health risks associated with your topic of interest.
  3. Create a question that should explore beliefs and perceptions about external influences related to your selected topic.
  4. Create a third question that will help you in understanding the perception (in group members) of roles towards improving the health problem.

Please remember for discussion posts: the initial post must be uploaded by the WEDNESDAY of the week and two replies to your peers by Saturday at 2359.

Please note the grading rubric for the discussion board.

As a reminder, all discussion posts must be a minimum of 250 words, references must be cited in APA format 7th Edition and must include a minimum of 2 scholarly resources published within the past 5 years.

Question to Explore Beliefs and Perceptions

Title: Exploring Perceptions and Beliefs About Obesity in a Community Focus Group

  1. Group Definition and Setting: For this community focus group activity, we will address the health problem of obesity. Our group will consist of 12 participants who are adults living in a suburban community with diverse socioeconomic backgrounds. To ensure homogeneity, we will use the following criteria:
    • Age: Participants should be between 25 and 55 years old.
    • BMI: Participants should have a BMI of 30 or higher, categorizing them as obese.
    • Gender: An equal representation of both genders to ensure gender diversity.
    • Ethnicity: A diverse mix of ethnic backgrounds within the community.

The setting for this activity will be a community center, providing a comfortable and neutral environment for open discussions.

  1. Opening Question to Explore Perceptions of Health Risks: “Thank you all for joining this discussion. To start, I’d like to hear your thoughts on what you perceive as the most significant health risks associated with obesity. What are your concerns when it comes to the impact of obesity on overall health and well-being?”
  2. Question to Explore Beliefs and Perceptions about External Influences: “Obesity can be influenced by various external factors such as access to healthy food options, neighborhood environments, and socioeconomic status. How do you believe these external influences have contributed to the obesity issue in our community? Are there specific challenges you’ve experienced or observed?”
  3. Question to Understand Perceptions of Roles in Improving the Health Problem: “As community members, what roles do you think we can collectively play in addressing and improving the issue of obesity in our community? Are there any specific actions, programs, or initiatives you believe would be effective in promoting healthier lifestyles and reducing obesity rates?”

In this discussion, we aim to gather insights into the participants’ perceptions, beliefs, and attitudes regarding obesity in their community. The information collected will help in designing targeted interventions and programs that align with the community’s needs and preferences. Additionally, by involving community members in the discussion, we hope to foster a sense of ownership and empowerment in addressing this health issue.
