POLICY/REGULATION FACT SHEET

As a professional nurse, you are expected to apply your expertise to patient care. On occasion, you will also be expected to share that expertise.

With evolving technology and continuous changes to regulations designed to keep up these changes, there is usually a need to share information and expertise to inform colleagues, leadership, patients, and other stakeholders.

In this Assignment, you will study a recent nursing informatics-related healthcare policy, and you will share the relevant details via a fact sheet designed to inform and educate.

POLICY/REGULATION FACT SHEET

Title: Fact Sheet on Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA)

Introduction: The Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) is a U.S. healthcare policy enacted in 2015. It aims to reform Medicare payments by shifting towards a system that rewards quality and value over volume of services provided. MACRA establishes the Quality Payment Program (QPP), which includes two tracks for clinician participation: the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) and Advanced Alternative Payment Models (APMs).

Impact on System Implementation: MACRA has significant implications for system implementation within healthcare organizations. It necessitates the adoption of electronic health record (EHR) systems capable of capturing and reporting on quality measures. Organizations must ensure interoperability of systems to exchange health information seamlessly.

Impact on Clinical Care, Patient/Provider Interactions, and Workflow: MACRA influences clinical care by incentivizing the delivery of high-quality, coordinated care. It fosters patient-provider interactions focused on shared decision-making and patient engagement. However, it also introduces administrative burdens related to data collection and reporting, potentially impacting workflow efficiency.

Organizational Policies and Procedures: Our healthcare organization has developed comprehensive policies and procedures to comply with MACRA requirements. These include:

  • Implementation of certified EHR systems to capture quality data accurately.
  • Training programs for staff to ensure proficiency in using EHRs for reporting purposes.
  • Quality improvement initiatives to enhance clinical processes and outcomes.
  • Regular audits and assessments to monitor compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Collaboration with payers and stakeholders to explore participation in APMs to maximize incentives.

Conclusion: In summary, MACRA represents a shift towards value-based care and quality improvement in healthcare delivery. While it presents challenges in system implementation and workflow management, our organization is committed to complying with the regulations and leveraging them to improve patient outcomes and provider satisfaction.
