Reflective Essay: Application of Middle Range Theories in Nursing Practice and the Role of Mentorship

Over the past eight weeks, I have experienced significant academic and professional growth through the exploration of nursing theories, particularly middle range theories, and their practical application in clinical settings. The integration of theory into nursing practice has deepened my understanding of patient-centered care and has enhanced my critical thinking when approaching complex patient scenarios. This course has allowed me to bridge the gap between theoretical frameworks and real-world nursing, making my practice more intentional and evidence-based.

Middle range theories have emerged as essential tools in shaping and guiding nursing practice. These theories, such as Kolcaba’s Theory of Comfort, Pender’s Health Promotion Model, and Watson’s Theory of Human Caring, are practical and adaptable to various clinical settings. Unlike grand theories, middle range theories provide a more focused lens, offering specific strategies for addressing patient needs. For instance, in my current clinical environment, I have found Kolcaba’s Theory of Comfort particularly applicable when addressing chronic pain management.
