My capstone research inquiry revolves around nurse retention, a critical issue in healthcare. Nurse retention is essential because it directly impacts both individual healthcare professionals and the broader community. To address the identified needs that prompted my inquiry, it is crucial to examine the individual and community aspects of nurse retention.
Individual Needs:
- Job Satisfaction: Nurses require job satisfaction to provide quality care and maintain their own well-being. High turnover due to job dissatisfaction can lead to staffing shortages and negatively impact patient outcomes.
- Work-Life Balance: Nurses need a balance between their professional and personal lives. Burnout and exhaustion are common when this balance is not achieved, affecting the quality of care provided.
- Career Development: Nurses seek opportunities for professional growth and development. A lack of career advancement prospects can lead to frustration and turnover.
- Emotional Well-being: The demanding nature of nursing can take a toll on nurses’ mental health. They need support systems and strategies to cope with stress and trauma.
Community Needs:
- Access to Quality Healthcare: The community relies on nurses for their healthcare needs. High nurse turnover can result in reduced access to healthcare services and potential disruptions in care continuity.
- Patient Safety: Nurse retention is crucial for patient safety. Continuity of care provided by experienced nurses is essential to prevent medical errors and ensure positive health outcomes.
- Healthcare Costs: High nurse turnover can lead to increased recruitment and training costs. These expenses are ultimately passed on to the community in the form of higher healthcare costs.
- Community Well-being: Communities benefit from a stable healthcare workforce. Nurse retention contributes to the overall well-being of the community by ensuring consistent and high-quality healthcare services.
My research inquiry on nurse retention seeks to identify the factors contributing to nurse turnover and explore strategies to enhance nurse retention. By addressing these factors and implementing effective retention strategies, I believe my findings can directly address the identified individual and community needs. Improved nurse retention will lead to increased job satisfaction, better work-life balance, enhanced career development, and improved emotional well-being for nurses, ultimately resulting in better patient care, reduced healthcare costs, and improved overall community well-being.
