Improving Health of Young Adults

Despite increased abilities across developmental realms, including the maturation of pain systems involving self-regulation and the coordination of affect and cognition, the transition to young adulthood is accompanied by higher rates of mortality, greater engagement in health-damaging behaviors, and an increase in chronic conditions.  Rates of motor vehicle fatality and homicide peak during young adulthood, as do mental health problems, substance abuse, unintentional pregnancies, and sexually transmitted infections.

Describe how the advanced practice nurse can play a role in improving the health of young adults through preventive screening and intervention.

Title: Improving Young Adult Health Through Preventive Screening and Intervention: The Role of Advanced Practice Nurses

Introduction:

Young adulthood is a critical developmental phase characterized by increased abilities across multiple domains. However, it is also a period of heightened health risks, including higher rates of mortality, engagement in health-damaging behaviors, and the onset of chronic conditions. Advanced Practice Nurses (APNs) can play a crucial role in improving the health of young adults through preventive screening and timely interventions. This paper outlines the key health challenges faced by young adults and explores how APNs can contribute to addressing these issues.

Health Challenges in Young Adults:

  1. Mortality and Accidents: Rates of motor vehicle fatalities and homicides peak during young adulthood, making it a vulnerable period for premature death.
  2. Mental Health and Substance Abuse: Young adults are susceptible to mental health problems and substance abuse, which can lead to long-term consequences if left untreated.
  3. Unintentional Pregnancies and Sexually Transmitted Infections: Unplanned pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections are significant health concerns during this life stage.

Role of Advanced Practice Nurses:

  1. Preventive Screening and Assessment:

APNs can conduct comprehensive health screenings, including mental health assessments, substance use evaluations, and sexual health screenings. By identifying risk factors early on, APNs can help prevent or mitigate the development of chronic conditions and adverse health outcomes.

(Dolatian et al., 2019; Vigod et al., 2020)

  2. Health Promotion and Education:

APNs can provide health promotion and education tailored to the specific needs and challenges faced by young adults. They can raise awareness about the importance of safe driving practices, safe sexual behaviors, and the consequences of substance abuse.

(LeBlanc et al., 2019; Sales et al., 2021)

  3. Counseling and Support:

APNs are well-equipped to provide counseling and support to young adults dealing with mental health issues, substance abuse problems, or unplanned pregnancies. By offering evidence-based interventions, APNs can improve coping mechanisms and resilience.

(Vigod et al., 2020; Sales et al., 2021)

  4. Implementing Preventive Programs:

APNs can take an active role in implementing preventive programs targeted at reducing risky behaviors and promoting overall well-being. These programs may include driver safety courses, mental health workshops, and substance abuse prevention initiatives.

(LeBlanc et al., 2019; Dolatian et al., 2019)

Conclusion:

Young adulthood is a critical and vulnerable phase in a person’s life, marked by increased health risks and challenges. Advanced Practice Nurses can significantly contribute to improving the health of young adults through preventive screening, health promotion, counseling, and the implementation of targeted interventions. By taking a proactive and holistic approach to young adult healthcare, APNs can support positive health outcomes, reduce mortality rates, and enhance overall well-being during this crucial life stage.
