Long and Short Term Goals

Directions:  Write 2 long-term and 3 short-term goals (or vice versa) professional nursing SMART goals. Each goal must be written in the SMART format and include a month and year deadline.  In addition, each SMART goal must include 3 Action Steps that need to be accomplished to meet the goal. SMART goals must be related ONLY to your professional nursing career development and growth.

Short Term Goal 1 SMART Goal (Month/Year): By December 2023, I will complete a certification course in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).

Action Items:

  1. Research and identify reputable ACLS certification courses available locally or online by the end of August 2023.
  2. Enroll in the chosen ACLS certification course and complete the online modules and practice exams by the end of October 2023.
  3. Schedule and attend the in-person ACLS skills assessment and final examination by December 2023.

Short Term Goal 2 SMART Goal (Month/Year): By March 2024, I will become proficient in using electronic health record (EHR) systems.

Action Items:

  1. Identify the primary EHR system used in my workplace or preferred healthcare setting by the end of September 2023.
  2. Attend EHR training sessions or workshops offered by my employer or external providers by January 2024.
  3. Regularly practice using the EHR system during my work shifts and seek guidance from experienced colleagues or IT support to improve proficiency by March 2024.

Long Term Goal 3 SMART Goal (Month/Year): By July 2025, I will earn a Master’s degree in Nursing Education to become a qualified nursing educator.

Action Items:

  1. Research and compare accredited Master’s in Nursing Education programs by the end of September 2023.
  2. Apply to the chosen program(s) by December 2023 and complete all necessary admission requirements.
  3. Successfully complete all required coursework, clinical rotations, and final thesis/project to obtain the Master’s degree by July 2025.

Long Term Goal 4 SMART Goal (Month/Year): By June 2026, I will achieve certification as a Certified Pediatric Nurse (CPN).

Action Items:

  1. Review the eligibility requirements for CPN certification and identify any gaps in my current knowledge or experience by December 2023.
  2. Create a study plan and schedule dedicated study time to prepare for the CPN certification exam by June 2026.
  3. Register for the CPN certification exam and successfully pass it by June 2026.

Long Term Goal 5 SMART Goal (Month/Year): By December 2027, I will assume a leadership position within my nursing department or healthcare organization.

Action Items:

  1. Seek opportunities to develop leadership skills by volunteering for leadership-related tasks or projects within my current role by December 2023.
  2. Engage in professional development activities focused on leadership and management, such as attending seminars or workshops, by December 2025.
  3. Apply for leadership positions within my organization or explore external job opportunities to advance into a leadership role by December 2027.
