As you answer the question, consider how collaboration with other people in other disciplines will directly affect you as a nurse and influence your nursing practice in the future. Please be sure to include citations from the textbook and other course materials to support your discussion responses. Also, include the complete reference for your citations at the bottom of your discussion post. At this point, I’m not concerned about perfect APA formatting as this is a writing style you will be learning throughout this class.

As a learner, examining and improving communication and collaboration skills is crucial for my growth as a nurse. In the professional setting, I use various resources to enhance my awareness of communication skills. One of the main resources is self-reflection. By regularly reflecting on my interactions with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare professionals, I can identify areas where I may need improvement and work on enhancing my verbal and non-verbal communication.
Another valuable resource is feedback from peers and mentors. Seeking constructive feedback from others allows me to gain insights into how my communication style is perceived by others and provides opportunities for continuous improvement. I actively engage in discussions with my colleagues and participate in communication workshops or training sessions to learn effective communication techniques and strategies.
When it comes to interprofessional collaboration, nurses bring several important communication skills to the table. One such skill is active listening. By actively listening to other healthcare team members, nurses can better understand their perspectives, concerns, and expertise, which leads to more effective collaboration. This skill is highlighted in the textbook “Professional Nursing: Concepts & Challenges” which emphasizes the importance of active listening for establishing strong collaborative relationships (Masters, 2019, p. 173).
Effective communication skills, such as clarity and conciseness, are also crucial for nurses in collaborative interactions. Clearly conveying information and instructions helps prevent misunderstandings and ensures that all team members are on the same page. Additionally, being open and respectful in communication fosters a positive and inclusive collaborative environment, where everyone feels comfortable expressing their ideas and concerns.
Lastly, empathy and emotional intelligence play significant roles in nursing practice and interprofessional collaboration. Understanding and acknowledging the emotions and perspectives of other healthcare professionals build trust and rapport within the team. As stated in the textbook, emotional intelligence is a fundamental aspect of nursing practice that contributes to effective collaboration and positive patient outcomes (Masters, 2019, p. 181).
In conclusion, being aware of our communication skills and continuously improving them is essential for nurses. Through self-reflection, seeking feedback, and participating in communication training, nurses can enhance their communication abilities. Effective communication skills such as active listening, clarity, and empathy are vital for successful interprofessional collaboration, leading to improved patient outcomes and overall nursing practice.
