These and many other topics are worthy of discussion. Not surprisingly, much has been said in the research, within the profession, and in the news about these topics. Whether they are issues of finance, quality, workload, or outcomes, there is no shortage of changes to be addressed.
In this Discussion, you examine a national healthcare issue and consider how that issue may impact your work setting. You also analyze how your organization has responded to this issue.

National Healthcare Issue/Stressor: Escalating Healthcare Costs
Impact on Work Setting
One of the most pressing national healthcare issues is the escalating cost of healthcare. This issue significantly impacts my work setting, a primary and acute care facility, by straining resources, limiting patient access to necessary services, and increasing the burden on healthcare providers. High costs can lead to patients delaying or forgoing care, which exacerbates health conditions and increases long-term healthcare expenditures.
Social Determinants of Health
Several social determinants of health influence this issue, with economic stability being the most prominent. Patients with limited financial resources face significant barriers in affording care, medications, and necessary treatments. Additionally, education and access to quality healthcare services are critical determinants. Individuals with higher education levels are more likely to understand health information and navigate the healthcare system effectively, while those with lower socioeconomic status may struggle more.
Organizational Response
Our healthcare system has responded to the issue of escalating costs through several initiatives. For instance, the implementation of value-based care models aims to improve health outcomes while reducing unnecessary expenditures by incentivizing healthcare providers to focus on quality rather than quantity of care (Miller, 2020). Additionally, the organization has invested in preventive care programs and patient education to mitigate long-term costs by addressing health issues early (Smith et al., 2019). Telehealth services have been expanded to reduce overhead costs and improve access for patients in underserved areas, ultimately aiming to decrease overall healthcare spending (Jones & Green, 2021).
These efforts reflect a proactive approach to managing healthcare costs, although challenges remain. Continuous evaluation and adaptation of these strategies are essential to ensure they meet the evolving needs of patients and the healthcare system.
