Practicum Achievements and Challenges

During my practicum experience, I revisited the goals and objectives outlined in my Practicum Experience Plan and aimed to assess the degree to which I achieved them. The primary goals included gaining practical experience in the field and applying evidence-based practices. I am pleased to report that I successfully accomplished these goals.

One of the most challenging patients I encountered during my practicum was a male child with ADHD. The most significant challenge in this case was developing effective communication strategies to engage the child in therapy. I had to adapt my approach to suit his needs, which was a valuable learning experience.

Another challenging patient was an older adult male who had been suffering from Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) due to the loss of his son to COVID-19. The emotional complexity of the case and the need for empathetic care made it particularly challenging. I learned the importance of providing support and understanding to individuals experiencing profound grief and loss.

The third challenging patient was a female with PTSD resulting from the border processing journey to the USA. The challenge in this case was helping her cope with the traumatic experiences she had endured, understanding her cultural background, and providing culturally sensitive care. This experience taught me the importance of cultural competence and trauma-informed care.

Throughout the practicum, I learned the significance of using evidence-based practices in patient care. I had access to various resources, including research papers, clinical guidelines, and consultations with experienced professionals, which assisted me in providing the best possible care to my patients.

In hindsight, I would have focused more on time management and organization to better manage patient flow and volume. I realized that efficient time management is crucial in providing quality care and maintaining a balance between different patient cases.

As I continue to develop my skills and knowledge, I aspire to be a social change agent within my community. I plan to use my growing skillset to raise awareness about mental health issues, particularly in underserved populations. I believe that through community outreach and educational initiatives, I can contribute to reducing the stigma associated with mental health problems and promoting overall well-being.

In terms of my communication and feedback with my preceptor, I have greatly appreciated the mentorship I received during my practicum. I feel that I have grown professionally, and I attribute this growth to the knowledge and skills I acquired at the university. The two preceptors I had were positive influences, providing valuable guidance and feedback.

In conclusion, my practicum experience has been highly rewarding, allowing me to achieve my goals and objectives, albeit with some challenges. I have gained valuable insights into working with diverse patient populations, applying evidence-based practices, and the importance of cultural competence. As I continue on my journey, I am confident in my readiness to take the next step in my career, including pursuing my board exams and contributing positively to my community.
