Steps for Prevention or Health Promotion

Identify a common perceptual, neurological, or cognitive issue and discuss contributing factors. Outline steps for prevention or health promotion for the patient and family. Identify public health departments or local resources in your area that the patient or family could reach out to for support.

Initial discussion question posts should be a minimum of 200 words and include at least two references cited using APA format. Responses to peers or faculty should be 100-150 words and include one reference. Refer to “RN-BSN Discussion Question Rubric” and “RN-BSN Participation Rubric,” located in Class Resources, to understand the expectations for initial discussion question posts and participation posts, respectively.

One common cognitive issue is dementia, a term encompassing various neurological disorders characterized by a decline in cognitive function beyond what is expected from normal aging. Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, and Lewy body dementia are some common types. Contributing factors include genetic predisposition, age, cardiovascular health, lifestyle factors (such as diet and exercise), and environmental factors (like education and social engagement) (Alzheimer’s Association, 2021).

Prevention or health promotion strategies for patients and families involve maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, cognitive stimulation, social engagement, and managing cardiovascular risk factors like hypertension and diabetes. Encouraging participation in activities that challenge the mind, such as puzzles, reading, or learning a new skill, can also help maintain cognitive function (Livingston et al., 2020).

In my area, families can reach out to the local Alzheimer’s Association chapter for support. They provide resources, support groups, educational programs, and services for individuals with dementia and their caregivers. Additionally, public health departments often offer programs focused on promoting brain health and cognitive function in older adults, which families can access for further support and guidance.
