Transformational leaders use several types of power to inspire and motivate their followers, including referent, expert, and charismatic power. These types of power enable leaders to create significant change by aligning their team’s values and goals with organizational objectives.

Referent Power is based on the leader’s ability to build strong relationships and foster respect and admiration among their followers. Transformational leaders leverage this power by being role models, demonstrating integrity, and showing genuine concern for their team members. For instance, in an urgent care setting, a transformational leader who consistently shows empathy and understanding towards both patients and staff can build a supportive and trusting work environment.

Expert Power arises from the leader’s knowledge and skills. Transformational leaders use their expertise to guide and educate their team, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional development. In urgent care, a leader with a deep understanding of clinical procedures and protocols can effectively mentor staff, improving patient care and operational efficiency.

Charismatic Power is derived from the leader’s ability to inspire and energize their followers through their vision and enthusiasm. Transformational leaders often articulate a compelling vision that resonates with their team, motivating them to strive for excellence. In urgent care, a leader who passionately communicates the importance of providing high-quality, patient-centered care can inspire staff to go above and beyond in their duties.

In my experience working at an urgent care facility, our director exemplifies transformational leadership through her use of these types of power. She regularly holds training sessions to share her extensive clinical knowledge (expert power), always takes the time to listen and address concerns (referent power), and consistently communicates a clear vision of exceptional patient care that motivates the entire team (charismatic power). Her leadership has not only improved the quality of care we provide but also enhanced team cohesion and job satisfaction.
